Why Understanding Alone Doesn’t Change Anything.

How does understanding become a permanent change or a new way of living and relating?

We often misinterpret understanding and realisations as transformative, believing that others' insights will automatically alter their behaviour towards others. Unfortunately, this is far from the truth.

I’d also like to talk to you openly about how therapy might not work at all for many people who choose to go for it and don’t continue, or don’t find it helpful. Of course, not all therapists are right for everyone, just like we follow our own diets, choose our own professions, hobbies, etc. The type of therapy and the therapist's unique style should align with your current experiences, the challenges you are facing, and your goals.

So if you truly want to create change, and you spoke to one therapist who didn’t make an impact or you couldn’t relate to, try other therapies and other approaches. You will find what aligns with you as a person, your goals, and your ability to sustain the work that’s required.

Speaking about the work that’s required…

That being said, some therapies can feel like a shortcut and can create a big impact on your growth, healing, and expansion. Approaches like RTT, hypnosis, and EMDR can take you deep, really fast.

And as effective as therapies and specialists can be, it still comes down to you to create real growth and change.

Let’s talk about how this path might look, so you aren’t in the misconception that awareness and understanding alone create maturity, growth, or change. This is where it starts, for sure, but whether it moves into anything bigger or more profound depends on what you do with it next.

  1. Awareness / Understanding / Clarity
The first step is, by all means, awareness. These words carry so much. It’s seeing what doesn’t work, how it impacts you and others, the consequences of staying the same, and having a clear vision of whether those consequences create the life and the future you desire. Seeing all of this clearly requires a level of responsibility that many of us aren’t ready for, and only the understanding itself will keep you where you are.

  2. Responsibility / Action
This is what moves you to the next level. Once you acknowledge the role you play in your own patterns, stuckness, or suffering, you can start seeing what needs to change. Taking responsibility is not easy, because it means facing truths we often try to avoid, minimise, or explain away. Facing yourself fully can feel like a breakdown moment… like the reality you believed all along in is cracking. But only through this do you create action, a plan, and a path toward a more authentic way of living. You lead with the actual steps towards change from here.

  3. Consistency
Once you’ve taken action, it might look brave. It might look like growth. But is it enough? It’s not. Only consistency allows any shift, change, or growth to become something real and reliable. Staying on a new path is not always easy, because the mind prefers familiarity, even when it’s destructive. To realign with something new, better, and bigger, you need to build new ways of coping and a new way of living that aligns with your goals.

  4. Conscious Choice and Resilience
Consistency can look convincing, like it should create lasting change. But does it always? Maybe. Because we will still face situations and triggers that bring up old patterns. This is where most slip-ups happen. But it doesn’t have to be that way. This is where conscious choice comes in. You begin to question your reactions, your triggers, your impulses, and choose what actually supports you instead of what pulls you back. And even if a slip happens, your awareness helps you recognise it, understand it, and guide yourself back to a healthier way.

  5. Metacognition
Long-term growth and change are created from the ability to observe your thoughts, emotions, and decisions, allowing you to choose with clarity rather than react impulsively. This is where deeper, stable transformation occurs. You start to live in alignment with your values, your truth, and the person you aspire to be. You create your life through each choice you make instead of going through life on autopilot.

So here is the answer to the question of whether therapy works. Mostly, it’s you who does the work. But it helps to have the right person supporting you and guiding you toward the life you truly desire.

Empatherically Yours,
Daris Kozhukhar
