You Become Who You Surround Yourself With.
We all possess a beautiful set of personal skills that make us who we are. We all want to feel our uniqueness, our significance, our individuality — with all the strengths and also the drawbacks that we carry.
Our experiences, accumulated knowledge, exposure to different cultures, spirituality, travel, education, work environments… all of it makes up our value. Everything we experience, grasp, learn, and apply becomes a part of who we are.
And as much as we like to believe that we simply are who we are, we have to start looking deeper into how we become who we are.
Many of the things I mentioned are impactful, yes. But there is something just as powerful that is often overlooked.
Who we surround ourselves with.
Who we communicate with.
Who we spend our time with.
Where we channel our energy.
What kind of community are we part of?
Is it the one that feels easy and familiar? Or the one that inspires us, expands us, challenges us and allows us to see life differently?
Who we surround ourselves with is crucial. Because when we spend enough time with people who share certain values, interests, and lifestyles, we begin to adopt them. It becomes habitual.
It becomes what we see, what we hear, what we engage with. And eventually, it becomes our normal.
Sometimes, even the things we once judged in others can slowly become acceptable to us… simply because we are surrounded by it long enough. So when we choose our friends, our environments, the places we go to, we are choosing the direction in which we grow.
Let’s say your goal is to stay healthy and fit. If you start going to the gym, build friendships there, join classes and events, surround yourself with people who prioritise wellness, it becomes easier. That lifestyle becomes natural.
Now imagine your goal is to grow a business or change something in your life. You attend workshops, join communities where people share ideas, build, create, stay inspired; it becomes your new reality. It becomes something you do. And eventually, something you are.
And the same applies the other way.
If you keep going to places just to be seen, indulge in unhealthy or destructive habits and behaviour, things that don’t support you or your growth, surround yourself with people who normalise that, it becomes your normal too. It becomes what you do. It becomes who you are.
Now, none of these influences is permanent. They can be phases, periods of time that shape and change your direction. But they are also opportunities to pause and ask yourself:
Is this taking me closer to where I want to be?
What kind of life am I building?
What kind of mindset am I reinforcing?
What kind of future am I aligning with?
You can reassess at any point. You can shift your environment. You can choose differently.
You can start creating new opportunities by surrounding yourself with people who think differently, grow intentionally, and inspire you through action.
And this is where I want to add something important.
Even if you don’t believe in energy or spiritual connection between people, which I personally do, you can still see how influence works.
The people around you affect you. They shape your perspective. They influence your behaviour.
So choose what feeds you, what supports you, what inspires you.
Not what just feels easy. Not what simply validates you in the moment. Not what keeps you comfortable just because it’s familiar. Because something can feel normal… and still not be right for you.
So take a moment and look around. Are the people around you helping you grow? Or are they keeping you where you are?
I’m not saying you need to cut everyone off or walk away from every relationship. But you can start choosing where you invest more of your time. And that alone can begin to change everything.
Empatherically Yours,
